Through a grant from the National Science Foundation, the Swenson College of Science and Engineering and the Department of Geological Sciences have purchased and installed a new scanning electron microscope. The microscope is capable of extraordinarily high resolution imaging.

Comedy, movies, night games, music, and lots more. UMD offers an extended weekend full of activities to help first-year students meet lots of people and get to know the campus and the myriad of resources available. Students will learn ways to get involved in campus life, connect with student organizations, and a get off to a great start on academics.

- Logging Affects Habitat: Forest professionals gather to learn about how breeding birds respond to forest harvesting in tree buffer zones near streams. Anna Peterson, who uses an iPod with speakers to call Ovenbirds, Warblers and Chickadees, is finishing a long-term NRRI research project on birds in forest riparian zones.
- Finland President Receives Honorary Degree: Tarja Halonen, President of the Republic of Finland, was awarded an honorary doctor of laws degree for public service, presented by UMD Chancellor Martin and University regents, on July 25 in Duluth. President Halonen spoke about the importance of education and the strong ties between the U.S. and Finland.
