The UMD Student Body in Fall 2008

  • The total student enrollment was 11,366.
  • The student body included 5,822 men and 5,490 women.
  • 9,516 students were undergraduates.
  • 16.7 percent of UMD students came from northeastern Minnesota.
  • 38 percent came from the Twin Cities metro area.
  • 708 students stated they were minority. Minorities represented included Hispanic, African American, American Indian, and Asian American.
  • 205 international students attended UMD.
  • 918 students enrolled through Continuing Education.
  • 96 percent of undergraduates enrolled full time.
  • The average age of UMD students with known birthdates is 21; 11 percent are 25 or older.
  • 27 percent of students live in university housing.
  • Approximately 200 students will participate in the Undergraduate Research Opportunties Program (UROP) during 2008-2009, receiving funding of approximately $250,000.
  • 909 students were in graduate or professional programs.

The Entering Class of Fall 2008

  • 32 percent of the total enrollment were new students at UMD.
  • Of the new high school students for which a high school rank was provided (2,216):
    • 17 percent graduated from the top 10 percent of their high school graduating class.
    • 64 percent graduated from the top 35 percent of their high school graduating class.
    • 88 percent graduated in the top half of their class.
    • The average high school rank is 70.5.
  • The average ACT composite score for freshmen completing the enhanced ACT is 23.5.
  • 68 percent of students living in university housing are new students.

The Graduating Class of 2006-2007

  • 1545 students earned bachelors degrees.
    • Labovitz School of Business and Economics: 372 graduates
    • College of Education and Human Service Professions: 368 graduates
    • School of Fine Arts: 114 graduates
    • College of Liberal Arts: 399 graduates
    • Swenson College of Science and Engineering: 292 graduates
  • 214 students earned masters degrees.
    • College of Education and Human Service Professions: 47 graduates
    • College of Liberal Arts: 17 graduates
    • Swenson College of Science and Engineering: 23 graduates
    • Graduate School: 127 graduates
  • In 2006-2007, 53 students completed their second year of medical school at UMD.
  • In the spring of 2007, the College of Pharmacy, Duluth graduated its first class of 47 students who earned the Pharm.D. degree.
