Is Individualized Instruction Right for You?
Will an Individualized Instruction course suit your needs? Individualized Instruction (INI) courses at UMD are self-paced courses, often called distance education courses. Many of them are online or are web-enhanced.
Do you "have what it takes" to succeed with a distance education format? Depending on your personality, needs, lifestyle and learning style, an INI course may suit you well.
Work through the following questionnaire to see if self-paced learning is right for you.
| 1. | I am self disciplined and work well independently. | __Yes__ No |
|---|---|---|
| 2. | I complete tasks and assignments on time or ahead of schedule. | __Yes__ No |

If you answered "no" to a several of the questions, you may wish to reconsider enrolling in an INI course. A face-to-face course format that is not self-paced may better suit your needs. If you answered "no" to a technology question, you may want to consider computer training prior to enrolling in an online INI course. Traditional freshmen or sophomores admitted to a degree program at UMD should consult with their advisors before registering for an INI.
No matter how you scored yourself, remember that Individualized Instruction is not easy. Your professor will demand at least the same quality of work as he/she would receive from you face-to-face in a classroom. A similar number of hours will need to be committed for an INI as for a course that meets regularly. Remember that your course may include deadlines and instructions on assignments, but there will not be anyone telling you to "turn in your assignment." INI coursework is convenient-you do not have to commute to campus, and you can work at your convenience, either early in the morning, late at night, or anytime in between. Just remember: no matter when you decide to study, your professor will hold you accountable. So study hard and have a great semester! Good luck!
