Scholarships and Financial Aid

Continuing Education annually awards up to five $1,000 scholarships to outstanding CE students. Those eligible to apply for the scholarships include undergraduate and graduate non-degree seeking students, admitted CE certificate program students, and master of science in engineering management students. An additional scholarships is available for outstanding master of liberal studies students.

For all CE students

Theresa Ann Neil Scholarships
Up to two $1,000 Theresa Ann Neil Scholarships are awarded each academic year. Theresa Neil was director of Continuing Education from 1988 to 1994. Ms. Neil exemplified the lifelong learner, having completed both her bachelor's and master's degrees in business administration while employed at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Upon her death, an endowment was established to honor her commitment to, and support of, continuing education and learning throughout the life span. Scholarship applications may be obtained by contacting Hilary Ramsey at hramsey@d.umn.edu or 218/726-8101. Or you may download an application in PDF format. Completed applications are due October 16, 2009.

 

Robert Brownlee Scholarships
Up to three $1,000 Robert Brownlee Scholarships are awarded each academic year. The University for Seniors* Robert Brownlee Scholarships are made possible through a generous bequest from Robert Brownlee, an active member of University for Seniors who believed in the value of continuing education. Scholarship applications may be obtained by contacting Hilary Ramsey at hramsey@d.umn.edu or 218/726-8101. Or you may download an application in PDF format. Completed applications are due October 16, 2009.

* University for Seniors, an Institute for Learning in Retirement, is a peer-led, humanities-centered organization for older adults looking for an intellectually vital continuing education program in an academic environment.

 

Scholarships and Financial Assistance for the Master of Liberal Studies (MLS) Program

Each year, one $1,000-$1,200 Edward J. Smith scholarship is available for currently enrolled MLS students. It is awarded on the basis of academic excellence and financial need.

Edward J. Smith Scholarship
Edward J. Smith attended UMD and served as a member of the Academic Support and Student Life staff until his death in 1994. He valued lifelong learning and was a role model for those facing hardship and physical challenges. This scholarship is dedicated to experienced students returning to higher education. To be eligible for the Smith Scholarship, MLS students must be more than 25 years of age and have demonstrated financial need. Completed applications are due February 16, 2009.

Other opportunities available for MLS students include loans and financial assistance.
Although the MLS program has no research or teaching assistantships available,
students are eligible to apply for these positions in other departments.

Financial Aid

To be considered for financial aid at the University of Minnesota Duluth, you must fulfill the following requirements:
1. You must be admitted to a degree or eligible certificate program.
2. You must maintain satisfactory academic progress standards for financial aid recipients.
3. You must meet the various application deadlines and eligibility requirements.

These topics and many others are explained at the UMD Office of Financial Aid and Registrar Website at www.d.umn.edu/fareg. To apply for financial aid, complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). A new FAFSA is required for each academic year. The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov or from the Student Assistance Center.
