ResNet registration troubleshooting tips
Problem: When I try to access the ResNet registration page (or other secure https:// pages), I get the error message "Page not found, "Click here to register," or "Object not found".
Solution: Try the following steps in the order listed. After completing each step, try to access the web page again.
Verify that you have a 10.x.x.x IP address
Run IPCONFIG and check your current IP address:
- Select START - Run.
- At the command line, type in: cmd and click OK.
- At the windows prompt, type in: ipconfig and press ENTER.
- Check the IP address listed. If it is not 10.5.x.x, refer to the IP address table for troubleshooting tips.
Try typing in the full name
Open your web browser, type in the following URL address, and press ENTER:
https://netreg.d.umn.edu/register.html
Try a different web browser
If you're using Internet Explorer, try Netscape or Firefox. You can get recent versions of Netscape or Firefox here: UMD Software Download
Temporarily disable any firewalls
If you're running a firewall, temporarily turn it off. To turn off the Windows XP firewall:
- Click START - Control Panel.
- Click on the Security Center icon.
- Select Windows Firewall.
- Check the "Off (not recommended)" button, then click OK.
- Try the registration page again.
If you are using a different firewall (Norton, Black Ice, etc.), follow the vendor's instructions to turn it off.
After successfully registering, turn the firewall back on.
Add the ResNet Registration web page to your "Trusted" sites
- Open Internet Explorer, select the Tools menu, select Internet Options, then click the Security tab.
- Click Trusted sites, and then click the Default Level button. (If this button is greyed out, it is already set to "default".)
- Click the Sites button.
- In the Add this Web site to the zone box, type in: https://netreg.d.umn.edu/register.html. Click Add, click OK, and then click Apply.
Configure IE security, content, and advanced settings
- Clear the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) state and AutoComplete history:
- Open Internet Explorer, select the Tools menu, click the Content tab.
- Under Certificates, click Clear SSL State.
- Click OK when you receive the message that the SSL cache was successfully cleared.
- Under Personal information, click AutoComplete.
- Under Clear AutoComplete history, click Clear Forms, and then click OK when you are prompted to confirm the operation.
- Click Clear Passwords, click OK when you are prompted to clear all previously saved passwords, and then click OK two times.
- Verify that Internet Explorer is configured to use SSL 2.0 and SSL 3.0:
- Click the Advanced tab.
- Under Security in the Settings box, select the Use SSL 2.0 and Use SSL 3.0 check boxes (if they are not already selected), and then click OK.
Check for browser hijackers and other spyware
Spyware can alter the way your web browser works, redirecting your web traffic through a third-party web server before allowing your comptuer to access the intended site. Because this is a security risk, you will not be able to access any secure web site (like the ResNet registration page) if this is happening on your computer. A number of free spyware removal tools are available - you can get more information and download these here: Spyware/Adware Removal Tools
