Music scholarships are available to music majors and those applying to become music majors. Awards are offered to students who demonstrate outstanding talent in voice, strings, winds, percussion, keyboard and composition.
For scholarship consideration, students must complete a Department of Music application, submit one written letter of recommendation, and perform a live audition.

Students must pass a performance audition in order to be accepted into any music degree program. At the time of the audition, students must also complete diagnostic examinations in theory/aural/keyboard skills and an interview with the department head or an appointed designee. Any student who receives provisional acceptance into a degree program must pass a review (usually at the end of the first semester) to receive full acceptance. That review includes recommendations of major instructors and successful completion of an applied jury.

Music Scholarships
Scholarships, fellowships, and teaching
assistantships are available for graduate students.The following music
scholarships are available to undergraduate students:
- Bernie Bernstein Jazz Scholarship – awarded to an instrumental music major – preferably jazz studies – who will be a sophomore, junior, or senior in the next academic year. Awards based on musical ability and academic achievement.
- Billy Barnard Jazz Scholarship – awarded to fulltime students in the Department of Music who participate in the jazz ensembles or combos and who have exceptional skills in the art of jazz improvisation.
- Frank P. Comella Memorial Scholarship – awarded to outstanding undergraduate or graduate level music education majors who have demonstrated a firm commitment to the pursuit of Band, Orchestra, Vocal/Choral, or Elementary Music Education. Also based on financial need.
- C.L. Edson Music Scholarship – awarded to fulltime junior or senior music majors with a minimum GPA of 3.0.
- Mark Faricy Memorial Scholarship – need and merit based scholarship awarded to a junior music major who will be a senior in the next academic year. Recipients must possess outstanding artistic musicianship and commitment to the pursuit of a career in music. Preference is given to trumpet majors. Recipient must maintain a minimum of a 3.0 GPA.
- Charles Gendein, Sadie Gendein and Esther Gendein Latts Memorial Scholarship Fund – merit and need scholarships awarded to fulltime undergraduate music majors who have maintained a minimum GPA of 3.0 during the year prior to applying for the scholarship. Recipients must have graduated from a Minnesota High School. Applicants must apply to the head of the Music Department by submitting a statement outlining the applicant’s career goals and desire to pursue music. Statement should not exceed 250 words.
- Isaac and Rose Gershgol Scholarships – awarded to SFA students who are outstanding performers and are in need of financial assistance. Students must be in good academic standing.
- Gregg Johnson Scholarships – awarded to music majors on the basis of performance and creative ability, service to the department, and financial need. Students must be in good academic standing.
- Eric Tobias Johnson Music Scholarship – awarded to highly motivated music majors in good academic standing. Preference given to jazz studies majors.
- Dorothy Taraldsen Kozak Music Scholarship – awarded to full time music majors.
- Matinee Musicale Scholarships – awarded to music majors on the basis of talent and performance ability. Area juries make recommendations to the scholarship committee based on fall semester jury results.
- James R. Murphy Memorial Scholarship – awarded to undergraduate students who are members of the UMD Concert Band and/or Symphonic Wind Ensemble. Students must be in good academic standing.
- Joyce R. Nordstrom Music Scholarship - awarded to fulltime undergraduate music majors in good academic standing.
- Omnibus Music Scholarships – Awarded to undergraduate or graduate level music majors.
- Opera Scholarship – awarded to an opera student who has demonstrated outstanding musical and acting ability.
- Lynn Mitchell (Mitch) Rand Scholarship – awarded to fulltime music majors with a minimum of 3.0 GPA.
- Gerald A. Singer Family Scholarship – awarded to fulltime music majors with a minimum GPA of 3.0.
- OliveAnnaTezlaSchool of Fine Arts Scholarship – awarded to one fulltime SFA student who demonstrates scholarly and creative excellence, leadership, or service in the area of art, music, or theatre. Student must be a current junior with minimum of 3.0 GPA within the major.
- Chancellor String Quartet Award - The scholarship is underwritten by UMD Chancellor Kathryn A. Martin.
A talent scholarship of up to $1,250 per academic year will be awarded to four string players who demonstrate exceptional ability. The ensemble will constitute the UMD Chancellor’s String Quartet. Selection of musicians is by audition only. Past recipients must re-audition for renewal of award. Incoming students must audition during the regularly scheduled “incoming audition dates”. All recipients must be enrolled full-time at the University of Minnesota Duluth and must maintain a GPA of 3.00 in his or her field. Registering for private lessons on their primary instrument is strongly encouraged but not required. Each recipient will be expected to play in both the UMD Symphony Orchestra and the UMD Chamber Orchestra and perform in all scheduled concerts. The ensemble must also agree to perform outreach/recruiting and UMD service performances as needed and as determined by the office of the Chancellor and the Department of Music
